Don't leave me!

I think a lot of times the 2nd week of life can be the hardest.  Babies are trying to figure out day and night and apparently they hit a big growth spurt at 2 weeks.  I vividly remember this time with Jackson because I was dying of exhaustion.  Luckily my mom was able to come spend the week with us last week to soften the blow.  It was like I had a night nurse who was also on duty during the day.  In one word, amazing.  My main job was to make sure Davis had milk in his belly, that was it...oh and to rest.  Mom changed diapers, rocked Davis to sleep, cooked our meals, did our laundry, cleaned our house and entertained Jackson.  I don't know how she had any energy, but somehow she made it.  Even Drew raved about how much help she was, probably because he knew I would be in deep without her.  Unfortunately she left Thursday instead of Friday because there was a threat of freezing rain Friday and neither one of us wanted her driving in that.  Of course we both cried when she left.  I think she cried because she would miss us, but I was crying because it would be embarrassing to get on my knees and beg her to stay another month!  We all enjoyed her being here!

On a different note, we had to take Davis to the doctor yesterday.  Poor baby has thrush so he's on medicine now.  The doctor wanted to weigh him just to make sure he was gaining enough weight.  After seeing that he now weighs 9 lbs. the doctor's response was "Holy Moly!  I guess I'm not worried about your weight."  That's always a good sign.  What's funny is I was looking back at Jackson's book from when he was 2 weeks old and Davis is already slightly heavier.  Oh boy, what are we in for?  We may be creating a land of giants!

Getting weepy

What a week!  We can not believe that Davis is already 1 week old!  Time is going by way too fast.  My mom told me that when Davis got here I would feel like Jackson was grown.  I thought it was just one of those things that moms tell you, but no it's true.  Drew and I decided that when we change Jackson's diaper we feel like he's a 20 year old just because he is so much bigger and heavier than Davis.  I thought Jackson was still a little boy (I realize he is), but it's like over night he's turned into this big boy.  I don't quite know how I feel about that.  Jackson has been so sweet to Davis.  He's been giving him kisses, making his trains give him kisses and even trying to shush him.  It's going to be so fun watching them grow up with each other.

Jackson giving Davis love.

So far Davis is sleeping better than he did when we first came home.  He's going 3 hours in between feeding at night time and for the most part he's sleeping in between.  He's gotten used to sleeping in his crib instead of my belly, which is always a good thing.  Davis has been such a joy already!

Davis at 1 week old.

I will say though I think I'm turning into my mother.  It may be hormones or lack of sleep, but I've been so sentimental.  Anyone who knows Penny knows she's a crier about anything halfway sweet.  I knew it would probably happen one day, I just didn't expect it this early.  We took the boys to the aquarium earlier this week and happen to get there right when the dolphin show was starting.  I love dolphins and Jackson loves fish, so we decided to go.  Luckily it was dimly lit because when the dolphins came out and started flipping around and I looked at Jackson and saw the awe in his eyes for a minute I got teary.  I couldn't help but think how special it is to experience how awesome God made the world.  It is just so sweet to see things through the eyes of a child.  Of course Jackson lost interest pretty fast, but it just got me.  Poor Drew, he didn't see me but it will happen in the light soon I am sure.  What a sweet memory.

He's here!

Our family has officially gone from 3 to 4!  Even though we knew the time would eventually come, it hit us about 2 weeks ago that it would be Jackson's last weekend to be an only child.  We made a big deal about it and hit all of his favorite spots.  Jackson loved it and Drew and I really enjoyed spending quality time with our only son.  We started with his favorite breakfast, then off to lunch at the Varsity.  Yummy!  After the Varsity it was time to party at Catch Air.  Catch Air is one of those jump, inflatable places that seems to be more geared to toddlers instead of older kids.  Jackson loves it!  They have a dance party about every hour and boy did Jackson get down!

It had come time for Davis.  I was induced last Friday, January 11.  Luckily we didn't have to check in until 9 am, so we both got a full nights sleep before the craziness started.  By the time we checked in and did all the paperwork they didn't start anything until 10.  We all knew that my body doesn't respond to contractions, but who knew even with pitocin my body wouldn't move much?  It took hours to even get to 4cm!  The OB was even a little stunned about what to do next.  Luckily we dodged having a c-section!  I went from 4 cm to 10 cm very quickly.  In fact most of our parents were out to eat and we had to call them back!  After only 9 minutes of pushing Davis made his arrival.  Davis Elijah was born at 8:26pm, 8 lbs. 6 oz, 20.75".  He is just perfect!

Jackson has been such a good big brother already.  Jackson can't quite say Davis, but he does call him "D D".  It's so sweet.  When we put Davis in his crib Jackson tells him "nigh nigh" (night night).  Jackson has even been giving him love by kissing him on the head and loves to help unswaddle him.  They're going to have so much fun together!

Are you laughing?

Today was the update.  My OB didn't know if I would even make it to today, but I have.  It was time for another ultrasound just to make sure it wasn't a random growth spurt they saw last time.  Well, needless to say it wasn't.  Davis was measuring 40 weeks and 1 day, which I am only supposed to be 37 weeks and 4 days.  Obviously not only is he still big, but he's now gaining speed.  The ultrasound tech was laughing at me and even asked me "How are you walking?".  Sadly she was serious.  Understand this tech was not super young and had been doing this for quite a while, so for her to be laughing at Davis' size just solidified how big he actually is.  She of course did her job and looked at all of his organs and made a comment about how big his actual stomach was and how full it looked.  Davis apparently really likes Cheerios and OJ.  Then she moved on, because at this point she was just having fun.  She looked at his thighs and noted they were already "squeezable" and his arms already had a roll.  Oh and the cheeks, yeah I thought there may be something wrong because they were so fat but she assured me nothing was wrong he was just really "filled out".  Then she said that she wanted to look at his weight.  "I didn't think y'all did that."  She said "Not unless we're just interested because there is a pretty large gap for error."  (1 lb either way).  So she did her magic and said her guesstimate is 8 lbs. 4 oz. today.  Babies are supposed to gain 1/2 lb per week at this point, so her and the OB are guessing Davis will be slightly under 9 lbs. when they induce, a week early.  Drew and I are already talking to Jackson about needing to bulk up so he can always take his little brother.  I think Jackson may need all the muscle he can get if Davis is what everyone says he will be.  I guess only time will tell.  Tick tock until next Friday!
